How we verify
Benefits Broker Atlas is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- DOL EBSA Form 5500 datasets — Schedule A Part 1 — Insurance fee and commission information reported by carriers for each insurance contract of an employee benefit plan, 2024 plan year (latest file).
- DOL EBSA Form 5500 datasets — Form 5500 — The plan filings, used for participant counts, plan type and sponsor state.
- DOL EFAST2 Form 5500 search — The Department of Labor's search for any plan's filing and attached schedules.
We load the Department of Labor's 2024 plan-year Form 5500 Schedule A Part 1 file, which lists brokers and agents with the commissions and fees the insurance carrier reported for each insurance contract. We group rows by broker name (case, punctuation and company suffixes ignored) and five-digit ZIP code, count the distinct plan filings, and add up the commissions and fees. We list brokers with a US address named on at least two filings.
We join each filing to its Form 5500 for the number of plan participants, whether it is a health and welfare or retirement plan, and the sponsor's state. We do not name plan sponsors. For each broker we show its total and per-filing average, and how they rank among all listed brokers as percentiles. We do not call any amount high, low, expensive or fair.
Limits: Schedule A shows what insurers reported paying brokers on insured contracts, subject to the form's reporting rules, and does not capture every kind of broker compensation, for example fees an employer pays directly. The same firm can appear under several offices, ZIP codes or spellings, and names are truncated at 35 characters on the form. The data has no phone numbers or websites. Check a broker's insurance license with your state insurance department.
What a badge means
Named in Form 5500 filings: the firm is named as a broker or agent on at least two Form 5500 Schedule A filings in the Department of Labor's 2024 plan-year data. This shows that insurers reported paying it, not that it is licensed or suitable for your business. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-02. The Department of Labor updates these files as filings arrive; we re-pull when a new plan year is published.
